The Three‐Dimensional Light Field Within Sea Ice Ridges

چکیده
Sea ice pressure ridges have been recognized as important locations for both physical and biological processes. Thus, understanding the associated light-field is crucial, but their complex structure internal geometry render them hard to study by field methods. To calculate in- under-ridge light field, we combined output from an mechanical model with a Monte-Carlo ray tracing simulation. This results in realistic fields showing that levels within ridge itself are significantly higher than under surrounding level ice. Light guided through cavities scattering between blocks also more isotropic ridge-internal field. While true variability of transmittance can only be represented models, show simple parameterizations based on thickness macro-porosity allow accurate estimation mean available photosynthesis underneath studies large-scale models.

Geometric Effects of an Inhomogeneous Sea Ice Cover on the under Ice Light Field
Light measurements in the ocean provide crucial information about the energy fluxes in the climate and ecosystem. Currently radiative transfer problems are usually considered in horizontally homogeneous layers although it is known to be a crude assumption in many cases. In this paper, we examine the effects of a horizontally inhomogeneous sea ice layer on the light field in the water underneath...

متن کاملMorphology of sea ice pressure ridges in the northwestern Weddell Sea in winter
[1] To investigate the morphology and distribution of pressure ridges in the northwestern Weddell Sea, ice surface elevation profiles were measured by a helicopter-borne laser altimeter during Winter Weddell Outflow Study with the German R/V Polarstern in 2006. An optimal cutoff height of 0.62 m, derived from the best fits between the measured and theoretical ridge height and spacing distributi...
متن کاملInfluence of ice thickness and surface properties on light transmission through Arctic sea ice
The observed changes in physical properties of sea ice such as decreased thickness and increased melt pond cover severely impact the energy budget of Arctic sea ice. Increased light transmission leads to increased deposition of solar energy in the upper ocean and thus plays a crucial role for amount and timing of sea-ice-melt and under-ice primary production. Recent developments in underwater t...
